What you need

Operating system: Windows 10 or Windows 11
Runtime: No .NET install needed — the build is self-contained
Install: Per-user install, no administrator rights

Windows will warn you on the first run. That is expected.Format is not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC” and some antivirus tools flag the installer. Choose More info, then Run anyway. Signing costs about ten dollars a month and is on the list; until it is done, this warning is part of the deal and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Run the installer

Format-win-Setup.exe installs for your user only, with a Start menu entry and an entry in Add or Remove Programs. No administrator prompt, and no .NET runtime to install first.

Expect a SmartScreen warning

Builds are not code-signed yet, so Windows shows "Windows protected your PC" and some antivirus tools flag it. Choose More info, then Run anyway. We would rather say this here than let you find out alone.

The Free tier needs no key and no account. If you bought Pro or Max, paste the key you were sent and press Activate — verification happens on your PC.

Updates take care of themselves

Format checks for a newer build on launch, downloads it in the background, and installs it the next time you start the app — never mid-change.
